sensual auras meld

January 1 - January 4

as the fog lays upon the land

cattails stand as silent sentinels

stems glistening with golden brown hues

while plump flower heads whose fluff

was recently plucked by chickadees soak in

the earthy smell of water not quite frozen

So strange to see a lone cattail. I feel a certain reverence around them—as a source of food, with fronds for basketmaking, and absolutely awesome determination to push horizontal roots (underground) to completely unexpected places in the garden. I think of them as tailings!
